“Visitor tracking” can mean several different things, and searching for it returns a mix of analytics software, heatmap tools and agencies. For an eCommerce store, the useful question is what you need to know about your visitors and what you want to do with it. This post compares the main approaches so you can pick the right mix.
The main approaches
| Approach | What it answers | Typical examples of use |
|---|---|---|
| Web analytics | Where visitors come from, which pages they view, what they do before buying | GA4 reports on traffic sources and funnels |
| Ad platform tracking | Which ads led to purchases | Meta Pixel, Google Ads and TikTok conversions |
| Server-side tracking | Which purchases reach your ad platforms reliably | Meta Conversions API, server-side GTM |
| Behavior tools | Where visitors hesitate on a page | Heatmaps and session recordings |
| Conversion rate optimization | What to change so more visitors buy | A/B tests and funnel fixes |
How to choose
- Starting out. Make sure GA4 and your ad pixels are installed once, and that purchases are tracked with the correct value.
- Spending on ads. Add server-side tracking and check for duplicate or missing events, because ad platforms optimize on what you send them.
- Traffic but few sales. Use funnel data and behavior tools to find where visitors drop off, then test fixes.
Software or a service?
Tools collect data, but someone has to set them up correctly and read the results. Many stores have the tools installed with the wrong setup, so reports disagree with orders. That is why a tracking audit is a sensible first step before buying more software.
