Server-to-Server Conversion Tracking Explained for Ecommerce

Server-to-server conversion tracking means your server tells an ad platform about a conversion directly, instead of relying on a script running in the visitor’s browser. Meta calls its version the Conversions API, Google has server-side tagging and offline conversion imports, and TikTok has the Events API. The idea is the same in each: the server reports what actually happened.

How it works, step by step

  1. A visitor clicks an ad and lands on your store. The click ID (for example fbclid or gclid) is saved.
  2. The visitor buys. Your store, or a server container that receives the order, records the confirmed purchase.
  3. The server sends the purchase to the ad platform with the order value, currency and the click ID or customer details that allow matching.
  4. The platform matches the purchase to the ad and uses it for reporting and optimization.

Browser tracking vs server-to-server

Browser tag Server-to-server
Sees the event Only if the script loads and is not blocked From your own server, after the order exists
Affected by ad blockers Yes Much less
Order accuracy Depends on the page Can use confirmed order data
Setup effort Low Higher: server, matching data, deduplication
Needs consent handling Yes Yes

Common ways to set it up

  • Platform integrations. Some store apps send events to Meta or TikTok for you. They are quick but offer less control.
  • A server-side GTM container. Events go from the browser to your own server container, which forwards them to each platform. One setup serves several platforms.
  • Direct API calls. Your backend calls each platform’s API. Flexible, but more development work.

What to get right

  • Send the same event ID from the browser and the server so platforms can deduplicate.
  • Pass the click ID and the customer details you have permission to send, since matching depends on them.
  • Respect consent. Server-side does not remove the need for it.
  • Test with the platform’s own test tools before trusting the numbers.
